Compund light microscopes contain 2 or more objective lenses with different magnifications, and also one eyepiece lens. These magnifications can be adjusted to be able to view cells more clearly. Although, none of the cell organelles can be seen with light microscopes (that's what electron microscopes are for), a distinct outline of the plasma membrane should be seen, as well as the outline of the nucleus. This enables the viewer to determine the general shape and structure of a cell.
